What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy vein removal is a medical procedure that is performed by injecting a medicated solution into designated abnormal veins to reduce their appearance and improve the symptoms associated with these veins. The medicated solution eliminates the appearance of these abnormal veins by irritating the lining, which causes the targeted veins to swell and collapse. After the vein has collapsed, it turns into scar tissue and is gradually reabsorbed by the body.

How long will a sclerotherapy procedure take?
A typical sclerotherapy procedure usually lasts for about 30 minutes. The length of your treatment session may vary in time depending on the number and severity of veins being treated during your procedure. Multiple treatment sessions may be required in order to treat all the targeted veins in a designated area. Results may vary.
What is the recovery period?
You should be able to return to your normal activities within 24 to 48 hours of your procedure. We encourage patients to participate in regular movement as part of their recovery process to prevent blood clots from forming, but patients should avoid strenuous activities and/or exercise for at least two weeks after their procedure. Compressions stockings and/or bandages may be recommended for the first several weeks following a sclerotherapy procedure to encourage proper healing in the treated area.
What are the potential side effects?
You may experience some mild side effects like bruising, swelling, stinging, and/or discomfort in the treated area immediately following your procedure. Some patients may also experience mild swelling in the ankles and/or feet, or cramping of the muscles after a sclerotherapy procedure. These are temporary side effects and typically subside within a few weeks of your treatment.
