Facial hair is actually a common complaint with many women and can be caused by a number of things. For some facial hair is normal; it’s just a genetic trait that runs through families. Women, particularly those of Middle Eastern or Indian descent, are more likely to have facial hair. An abnormal cause of facial hair can be a hormone imbalance. PCOS is the most common hormonal imbalance that accounts for facial hair but even then, it’a only the source of about 25% or problems. A common myth is that if you fix the hormones, you fix the hair. Unfortunately that’s generally not the case. Correcting a hormone imbalance can have many benefits, including slowing the growth of unwanted hair, but it won’t make the problem go away. With the hormonal or abnormal facial hair, women may notice just a few coarse hairs on the chin and/or upper lip or they may experience a full male type of beard that begins with pregnancies or middle age. Patients who just ethnically or genetically have more or darker facial hair will usually see the hair develop at puberty.

Unwanted facial hair leads many women to spend hours every day plucking the hair or spending years, and great expense, on waxing or threading.
