The Making of a Tattoo

The most common method of making a tattoo is with an electrically powered tattoo machine. The machines are fit with a single needle or many needles that can puncture the skin between 80 to 150 times per second. The needles create a puncture wound and deposit tiny dots of insoluble ink into the dermal-epidermal junction of the skin. These dots of dispersed pigment come together to make the tattoo image.

About Tattoo Ink

The FDA does not regulate the ingredients of pigmented dyes used by a tattoo artist, so synthetic pigments and colorants can widely vary from industrial organics to minerals to plastic-based compounds. For example, most black pigments and permanent cosmetic inks will contain carbon or iron oxides and most blue pigments will contain copper salts or cobalt oxides, while other inks contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

How the UltraLight-Q Removes Tattoos

The UltraLight-Q uses an arsenal of light-based wavelengths that are specifically attracted to tattoo ink. To clear the ink from your skin, the laser system creates a collimated energy beam of light. The light passes through your outer skin layers, targeting only the embedded ink. Energy from the laser is rapidly absorbed by the ink, causing the pigment to fracture into microscopic particles. Over time, the body’s immune system will clean the particles from the skin, causing the tattoo to fade and eventually disappear.

Can Any Type of Tattoo Be Removed?

The UltraLight-Q laser system contains specific technical advantages for removing a wide variety of tattoos. These range from  professional to homemade or amateur, as well as traumatic and surgical tattoos. We will be happy to assess your tattoo(s) and discuss the treatment in detail with you during a no-cost, no-obligation consultation.

How Many Treatments Will It Take?

Not all body art is created alike; many factors are involved that determine the number of treatments needed. These can include:

  • How long the tattoo has been in the skin – Newer tattoos are a little more resistant, whereas older tattoos are easier to remove.
  • The depth and type of ink in the skin – There are many different types of pigment used to create tattoos.
  • Whether the tattoo was created by a professional artist or an amateur – Usually, professional tattoos need 6 to 8 treatments, whereas amateur tattoos need about 4 to 5 treatments. The sessions will be spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, allowing the body’s immune system to naturally remove the pigment fragments.

What Does the Treatment Feel Like?

Most patients report that the treatment sensation for removing a tattoo is similar to the one for getting a tattoo. Other patients say the laser treatment feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, a numbing cream can be used to make the procedure more comfortable.

How Will I Take Care of My Skin After the Treatment?

An anti-bacterial ointment and ice will need to be applied. If a scab forms, it is vital that the area is never picked or scratched in order to avoid scarring.
